U2 make surprise appearance onstage in London for Island Records

U2 made a surprise appearance onstage in London tonight (May 28).

The band took to the stage at the O2 Academy Shepherds Bush, joining African artist Baaba Maal just after he played his set as part of the Island Life gigs which are taking place at the venue this week to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the acts’ label Island Records.

Having played a full set with his band, Maal returned to the stage kicking off his version of Irish band’s ‘One’ before the full U2 line-up joined in acoustically.

Praising Maal’s “nobility”, Bono declared he was “the spark of Africa”, before the pair slipped into a short version of Bob Marley’s ‘Feel Alright’ – another Island Records artist.

The U2 frontman then declared “We’ve got one more in us”, before his band launched into ‘Vertigo’, thanking their former record label at the songs climax.

Yusuf Islam, aka Cat Stevens, is now set to headline the gig tonight.

Scattered Thoughts: Boom Boom POW!

Since we’re talking about the claw (and I do totally get the toy machine claw vibe, too), I have to say that in its current form, the claw also looks like a roller coaster to me. And a little bit like a crazy, old school, Godzilla monster.

What it doesn’t look like, exactly, is the claw graphic on U2.com. That sketch has a much more futuristic, sci-fi vibe than the mega hunk of metal being reported on by fans in Werchter. We are definitely still in the “sausage making” stage, if that makes sense. The claw is in progress, but you know that on opening night there will be some aspect to this finished product that we haven’t quite seen yet. I *really* can’t wait to see how The Bono weaves this crazy claw into being a symbol of this tour’s theme. (Whatever that theme might be).

Maybe because I am not as kind and gentle as others (or because I still have Star Trek 2009 on the brain), I am hoping the Claw Tour’s theme involves magnificent… lasers. And possibly a space ship. That blows things up

Yeah?

http://www.atu2blog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/claw.jpg

For example, on select North American tour stops, I would like the U2 Claw to utilize its lasers to shoot at the Black Eyed Peas. Do you think they are listed as an opening act for real? Or are they being set up for the laser claw to destroy them? Boom Boom POW!

I’d like the claw to showcase the evil, more menacing side of U2. The one I always read about in the Daily Mail and the Irish Independent. Come on, evil U2. Inhabit your alternate reality. On opening night, let your claw hone in on the members of the British tabloid media in attendance and  blast their asses bums with a laser beam.

Hey inattentive people in the crowd, no bathroom breaks during Fez-Being Born or you.get.BLOWED.UP.

Eye shadow hating, lyric berating enemies of The Bono be gone. The laser will destroy you.

Crazy? (Me?) Probably

But … really:

U2 get Magnificent in Morocco

Irish rockers U2 have released the video for their second single, “Magnificent”, off of their successful new album “No Line on the Horizon”.

Unlike the video for the first single “Get on Your Boots”, which had images of outer space and sexy girls in military uniforms, “Magnificent” takes a softer approach.

Directed by Alex Courtez (who also directed “Boots”), the band is seen walking through the streets of Fes, Morocco with the desert sun beating down on them. They walk with the locals as white sheets drape the surrounding buildings. Also, they are seen playing in a Moroccan house. Their guitars and amps are propped against the mosaic walls.

As per their official website, U2.com, “Magnificent” will be remixed an astounding four times. Versions of the song by Soha, Adam K, Redanka, Peter Tong, and Fred Falke are available for downloading.

U2 are no strangers to the mythical city of Fes. They recorded parts of their new album there and on the song “Fez: Being Born”, the Moroccan vibe is evident.

Let’s hope they bring a little bit of Morocco with them on their upcoming tour! But for now, satisfy your U2 craving with their “Magnificent” video.

A Wonderland of Elusive Toys

When I was a little girl growing up in Portland, Oregon, we lived across the street from a shopping mall. Because my grandma lived two doors down from us, I was lucky enough to make many trips to this mall throughout my childhood.

One of my favorite stops was an arcade at the end of the mall near G. I. Joe’s. It was one of those true 80s establishments—so pitch black that you couldn’t see the quarters you were about to blow on a game of Tempest and blaring with noise so deafening you couldn’t talk to the person next to you.

Aside from the Ms. Pac Man and Centipede records I was always trying to beat, I was mildly obsessed with the Claw Machine, which held the promise of grand treasures if you aimed the joystick and pushed the button at just the right time.

Of course, it was designed to make the actual delivery of toys next to impossible, and the best I’d usually get (after 10 or 12 tries) was a flat carnival-caliber stuffed animal that typically had a little gold thread looped at the top (I remember this specifically because I’d hang my winnings from the top of my canopy bed). Not remotely worth the effort or money, but it did give my grandma plenty of time to look at the card store next door, etc. while I tried.

How does this relate to U2, you ask?

Well, I’ve been excitedly watching all of the videos and photos come in as they’re building the stage for the tour. And I can’t help but wonder if the set designers could’ve possibly known that their vision would so greatly resemble an arcade relic from decades past? I mean really, if you actually study this thing, it’s almost identical to a claw from one of those old machines, only 100 times larger.

Wouldn’t it be cool if the U2 Claw surprised us all by moving out into the crowd and scooping some of us up, only to deliver us onto the stage (or into Larry’s lap)? I mean, we are talking about a band that once emerged from a lemon. Anything’s possible…right?

(RED) Mini, with mini donation

I just saw on Facebook that Dell has a PRODUCT(RED) version of its Mini Notebooks. Turns out, the computer isn’t the only thing that’s mini.

The starting price for the smallest Mini is $249. But if you want the (RED) version, it’s $40 more. (Other colors also cost $40 extra.) And of that $289 price, $5 goes to the Global Fund. It’s a nice thought, Dell, but color me unimpressed.

U2 fail to sell out their third gig at Croke Park

It’s hard to believe, but tickets for U2’s third Croke Park gig are still available. Given that tickets for the U2 360 tour sold out in just 40 minutes last March, it seemed natural that their final gig on July 27 would go the same way. But fans of the chart-topping superstars should note that there’s still a [...]

Stocki’s Song By Song

The thoughts and reflections generated by NLOTH just keep flowing on the ol’ Interweb.  Steve Stockman, author of Walk On: The Spiritual Journey of U2, is posting his own “Like a Song” series over at Soul Surmise.

Looks like he’s taking each one in order and he’s just posted about “Stand Up Comedy,” which has what he’s saying might be his favorite U2 verse yet.

He begins:

Stand Up Comedy comes out all Achtung Baby strut with a Curtis Mayfield/Bob Marley spiritual/political anthemic clarion call. Around the riffs, distortion and declaration to stand up for love we get some of Bono’s sharpest lines, most accusing self critique and one couplet that holds the key to the band’s entire canon as well as nailing a critical contemporary issue.

And the rest of his analysis is here.

for The Rev. Billy Graham (that preacher)

Apropos of nothing in today’s world of U2 news: Earlier this month the U2 Sermons blog posted the full text of the poem Bono wrote in 2002 for Ruth Graham about Billy Graham. (Thnx Beth.)

It starts, “The journey from father to friend … ” and you can finish reading it here.

Well, okay, maybe this is apropos of the recent broadcast of Bono’s poem about Elvis, “American David.”

Wonder whom Bono’s writing a poem about right now?
