U2 Songs in ‘Love Hate Love’ Documentary

U2’s “Love and Peace or Else” is featured throughout the trailer of a new film, Love Hate Love, that looks at how some people have responded to recent terrorist attacks in the U.S., London, and southeast Asia. The trailer is available now on the film’s web site and embedded below.

Via Twitter, KTF Films just told us that “One Tree Hill” is also used in the film. They said on Twitter earlier this morning that U2 granted permission for the film use.

Full Cast Set for Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark

Variety is reporting that the final casting is set for the much anticipated Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark musical hitting Broadway in November.

Among Main Stem vets are Isabel Keating, who appeared as Judy Garland in “The Boy From Oz,” Michael Mulheren (“Looped,” “Kiss Me Kate”) and Gideon Glick (“Spring Awakening”).

Also on board are Brit actress Natalie Mendoza (“The Descent”), U.K. TV actor Matthew James Thomas (“Britannia High”), and dance vets including Ayo Janeen Jackson and Dollar Tan.

Performers join lead thesps Reeve Carney (as Spidey), Patrick Page (as nemesis Green Goblin) and Jennifer Damiano (as paramour Mary Jane). Although roles for the rest of the cast were not confirmed, Keating seems a likely Aunt May, with Mulheren probably tapped as J. Jonah Jameson.

Previews begin November 14 and opening night is December 21. Tickets are now available through Ticketmaster.

The Perils Of Outdoor Gigs

As many of us caught Kings of Leon on the Vertigo Tour, this unfortunate story will be of interest. Apparently, KoL met some creatures who didn’t quite like their music. While performing at the Verizon Amphitheatre in St. Louis, Missouri, the band were pelted by nesting pigeons with poo. Yes, that’s right. KoL had to cut their set after only playing 3 songs because it was becoming quite unhealthy.

This was one of the top stories of the day at CNN.com, and after reading the full account of what happened, I just have to feel sorry for them. This is one complaint I don’t recall Bono talking about in his 30+ years of being on the road.

Cleveland To Turn It Up To 2011

Achtung rock history geeks!

I’ve got nothing specifically U2-ey here to say, but man, oh man is this music to my ears. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, OH, plans to open a long-awaited library and archives that will make more of its stuff available to students, teachers and the public.

See, the RRHFM has stuff, stuff and more stuff, a lot of which has been sitting in storage for years in nearby Berea. It’s the kind of stuff that might not draw the masses into the museum, but it helps tell in detail the stories of the vast cast of characters in rock and roll history. It’s the kind of stuff that gets geeky fans, students and academics — not to mention the director of the U2 Conference — really, really excited.

Up to now, most of this stuff has not been on display or accessible to anyone save the Rock Hall’s curators and archivists.  But come spring 2011, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Library & Archives will open its 22,500-square-feet not far from the museum on the metro campus of Cuyahoga Community College, in Tri-C’s new Center for Creative Arts. One wonders what U2 goodies will come out of hiding in Cleveland?

There’s a great, informative write-up about all of this by the Beacon Journal’s popular music writer Malcolm X Abram, which you can read for all the details. I’ll share a few lines here that are almost (I said, almost) as thrilling as hearing leaked clips from a new U2 album.

“Upon completion, the facility will have two primary areas. The first is the library, a public resource that will house a plethora of books, periodicals and audio and video recordings in many formats that anyone can use. The second is the archives, which will house a permanent collection of papers, photographs, recordings, vintage posters, handbills and tickets, and other rock and roll ephemera. Access to the ‘white glove material’ will be more tightly controlled for preservation and security reasons.”

“Over the years, rock and roll and popular music in general have become an important part of American culture, not only reflecting the tenor of the times but often providing the soundtrack to movements advocating social change. This is one reason the academic study of rock and pop music has been growing. “  – Dr. Laura Onkey, rock hall vice president of education

“We wanted it to be for scholars and academics, but we also wanted it to be for fans and journalists who are interested in learning about the music. It’s not cordoned off for just people in universities. We think we have a chance to get a really wide audience as well as enhance what we do at the university level.” – Dr. Onkey

“To talk like an old DJ, we want to be the No. 1 destination in the nation for the study of this music, and the library and archives can really make that happen.” – Dr. Onkey

On that last note, I wonder how a little ol’ confab studying the music, work and influence of a little ol’ Irish band would fit in to their wish to be the No. 1 destination for the study of rock and roll?

Rotten Says Rotten Things About U2

In a recent interview with London’s Daily Star, Sex Pistols front man Johnny Rotten proclaimed “U2 — that’s a band that never should have existed.” He went on to say that there’s “no life experience in any of their songs,” as he whined about not getting any bids to play the summer music festivals (U2 would have in Glastonbury).

He’s re-launched his band Public Image Ltd. to very little fanfare, and while he’s making ridiculous comments like these, I’d say that’s no surprise. Maybe it’s not so cool to be rotten anymore?

U2 Boy Wonder to Picture Perfect

Peter Rowen is someone that U2 fans should know very well.  If his name does not ring a bell, his face certainly will.  He  was photographed for the cover of   U2’s  iconic  albums,  Boy and War.  He is also the younger brother of Bono’s childhood friend, Guggi.

Peter, now 36, has gone on to become an award-winning photographer.  I am a big fan of his work which ranges from weddings to fashion, sports and a certain Irish band. In 2001, he went behind the camera to shoot U2 at their Slane Castle concert.  He even hopes to shoot them once again on their upcoming 360 Tour.

The following piece was just published.  Here he talks about his association with U2 and his own photography.  I hope you enjoy it.

Appeals Court Ruling is *&%#%^ Brilliant!

The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan ruled today that a government policy that can lead to fining broadcasters for airing a single curse word on live television is “unconstitutionally vague” and potentially a violation of the 1st Amendment.

This all came to light back in 2003 when Bono exclaimed during a live awards show that U2 winning a Golden Globe was “really f-ing brilliant.”

Of course, Janet Jackson’s exposed breast during the Super Bowl halftime show in 2006 didn’t help matters. Following that incident, Congress voted to increase the maximum fine for each violation to $325,000.

Today’s ruling will help prevent crippling fines for slips that censors aren’t quick enough to catch, and provide a little breathing room for…em…wardrobe malfunctions.

Aung San Suu Kyi Demonstrations

CNN is reporting that demonstrations are planned across the globe marking Aung San Suu Kyi’s 65th birthday and calling for her release from house arrest. Political leaders are also trying to put the pressure on the government to release Suu Kyi. President Obama said, “I once again call on the Burmese government to release Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners immediately and unconditionally, and to allow them to build a more stable, prosperous Burma that respects the rights of all its citizens.”

The Man Who Wrote Bono’s World Cup Script

A lot of people think Bono wrote the words that he recites in that World Cup TV commercial that features “Magnificent” in the background as Bono talks.

But the script was written by a copywriter named Nicholas Sonderup:

Sitting in a Manhattan office and clad in a U.S.A. soccer jersey, Sonderup is justifiably thrilled that so many people who have seen the minute-long ad, in which Bono reads his script while the opening chords of U2’s “Magnificent” linger in the recesses, assume that the globally-conscious Irish rock god himself wrote it.

“I remember saying in the edit room, ‘People are going to think Bono wrote those words,’” says Sonderup, who played Division I soccer at Winthrop University.

That’s from a recent article on Fanhouse, and it’s a good read.

Bono’s Outing

While waiting in line at my local grocery store, I was shocked to see that The National Enquirer finally attempted to “out” Bono with their cover story expose on “Who’s Gay and Who’s Not.” That’s him kissing Adam in the lower left corner of the cover.

It’s the first time I recall seeing him as a cover boy for this publication. I’m sure we can all rest assured knowing that their cracker-jack reporting got this story right.

“Walk On” Subject Detained Further

Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi, who was the inspiration for the U2 song “Walk On” has unfortunately had her house arrest status extended for what could be up to a year by the Burmese government. Read the full story at CNN here. I can’t help but wonder when this world will turn right-side up…

Henry’s At It Again

It’s been a while since we’ve had the pleasure of mentioning Henry Rollins anywhere on @U2, but as sure as the changing of the seasons, Henry’s back talking about U2 again. In his defense, anxious journalists just love to bring up the name “U2″ to get a reaction out of the guy. And he’s always [...]

Get Well, Paul McGuinness

Just stumbled on this while keeping up-to-date on material for an updated version of U2: A Diary (which I hope will happen, but don’t know for sure): According to the Ardmayle blog, Paul McGuinness hurt himself a couple Sundays back in a fall off a horse. Ouch. It happened before McGuinness gave a speech opening a new [...]

Man Crushes

I know the ladies out there have a crush on our Hitman, but more and more guys are coming out and admitting they have a crush on him too - and it’s not just Boy George this time! In Sunday’s Irish Independent, Brendan O’Connor admitted that he has a man crush on Larry as well. [...]

Update on Icons of Music auction

To update a story mentioned here a week ago (or so), Edge has announced he will donate 2 Gibson guitars and other personal items to the upcoming “Icons of Music” auction on May 31. In an interview with the Associated Press by phone while the band was in the studio, Edge said, “No one could ever [...]
