The Highlight Of His Year

When you receive six Latin Grammy awards including Album of The Year and your record sells 112,000 copies since January, most people would have trouble finding the bright spot in a very bright year.

For Colombian singer-songwriter Juanes however, the highlight of the year is clear and it came in June when he had the chance to meet the person who inspired him into music in the first place: Bono.

Talking with reporters and the local media before finishing the year with a four night concert stand in Bogota, Juanes spoke of the moment he met his idol in Japan.

“It was an experience that as a Musician, can’t be explained. His music and what they stand for is something that touches very deeply into my guts. Having talked with Bono is one of the biggest experiences that music has given me, and if it wasn’t for him I wouldn’t be here. Believe it.”

The two met in Yokohama, Japan to reach out and support the fight against extreme poverty in a peaceful protest to coincide with the G8 Summit.

Juanes also added:

“Bono is very knowledgeable about Colombia and he was very interested and asked a lot of questions about its social and economic progress. He also said he would very much like to play here”.

HERE is a Reuters video of the meeting between the two. (I apologize, only found video in Spanish)

The Highlight Of His Year

Easy, Breezy, Beautiful: Cover Boy

Wow, who knew eyeliner would be the hottest trend among rock stars in 2008?

From Brandon Flowers to David Cook, and a few others, eyeliner use among lead singers is once again on the rise.

Sure, it was hip among the Virgin Prunes and during most of Gavin Friday’s career, but now that Bono’s unleashed his need to don the eyeliner, is it now something to rebel *against* doing? Is it hip to see someone like Bono (at age 48) wearing it? After all, Bono’s A Clockwork Orange days were almost 20 years ago on the London stage…and Alex DeLarge’s use of eyeliner was a part of his trademark look.

After watching the video clip on Q magazine microsite, Adam explains that Bono’s once again getting into character and “experiments with a few different things to bring it alive again.” Does this mean that we’ll see a new character joining the ranks of The Fly, MacPhisto, The Mirrorball Man, and Fidel Bono (from PopMart during “Miami”)? I suppose we’ll have to wait and see as their promotional campaign unfolds and the new music becomes available.

That said, the eyeliner is a cheaper alternative to the $250+ shades for fans who want to join Bono’s look. They say the eyes are the window to the soul, and if Bono wants to bring your attention to his eyes, that must mean he wants to let you in as the shades are stripped away. Or, it could be his way of separating his rockstar image from his world leader image. Whatever it is (and I’m sure this question may be brought up by some magazine interviewer at some stage), it is something that is certainly causing a stir among fans not used to seeing yer man Bono wearing eye makeup while not in drag.

By the way…speaking of Brandon Flowers…here’s a great photo sans eyeliner of Bono with Brandon and Johnny Borrell that I hadn’t seen before…anyone know what magazine this came from?

U2 TO RELEASE FIVE VERSIONS OF ALBUM

Post-Holiday Investing

You might have caught the news a few days ago where Elevation Partners (where Bono is a board member) poured another $100m into Palm in the hopes that the company will stay stable and proceed with releasing their latest smartphone technology. Palm’s upcoming smartphone will rival Apple’s iPhone and provide competition on the market.

An alert @U2 reader spotted this story from a few years ago where Apple is buying U2. (note: it’s a parody blog…but pretty darn funny to say the least).

Thanks Moshe for the humor today! That blog is still funny to read two years later, although it’s sort of like the ghost of Christmas Past, Present *and* Future as the market and music industry continues to change.

Deja Vu..rtigo

The Seattle and Portland areas don’t see a lot of snow every year—in fact, as a child who grew up in Portland, I remember several years where we didn’t see any. This year has proven to be different.

For over a week now, the Pacific Northwest has seen snow, ice, “thundersnow” (I didn’t even know that existed), high winds, etc., which have paralyzed both major cities (and pretty much everywhere in between). And as we’ve been trading stories among the @U2 staff, commiserating about delayed (or canceled) holiday travels, almost everyone has brought up the fact that the last time we were all together as a “family,” it was doing the same thing.

The night before the final Vertigo U2 show of 2005, we hosted our @U2 10th Birthday Bash at Kell’s in Portland. That day, out of nowhere, the snow began falling—and it kept falling well into the evening, worrying all of us that our guests wouldn’t be able to make it. But thankfully, the white stuff didn’t keep anyone away.

It was a wonderful night with lively performances by Scott Perretta and Zoo Station, fabulous food, drinks and fellow fans. It ended (or didn’t) with many of us retreating to the Vintage Plaza Hotel to hold an impromptu after-party by the lobby fireplace. Good times!

Below is a mosaic of some of my personal pictures from that night. To check out our @U2 event page from back then, click here.

And thanks to my colleagues (and the snow) for sparking these beautiful memories!

U2: inside the new album

Q has had a world exclusive preview of the forthcoming new U2 album, provisionally titled No Line On The Horizon. Sessions for the long awaited album were completed at a feverish pace at Olympic Studios in West London throughout November. However, recording actually began in October 2006, with U2 teaming up once more with producers Brian [...]

Five different versions of U2’s No Line on the Horizon

Amazon is listing five different versions of U2's new album 'No Line on the Horizon'.

Two of the versions mentions a 'film download'. This should refer to a film the Dutch photographer and director Anton Corbijn shot for the album.

RIAA Suits And You

According to The Wall Street Journal, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has announced that it will cease suing individuals for illegal downloading of music. Instead, the RIAA will work with ISPs to have accounts terminated for illegal music sharing.

According to the article:

Instead, the Recording Industry Association of America said it plans to try an approach that relies on the cooperation of Internet-service providers. The trade group said it has hashed out preliminary agreements with major ISPs under which it will send an email to the provider when it finds a provider’s customers making music available online for others to take.

Depending on the agreement, the ISP will either forward the note to customers, or alert customers that they appear to be uploading music illegally, and ask them to stop. If the customers continue the file-sharing, they will get one or two more emails, perhaps accompanied by slower service from the provider. Finally, the ISP may cut off their access altogether.

This may sound familiar as this is the road Paul McGuinness mapped out at the MIDEM Conference in January:

Today, there’s a bigger issue and it’s about the whole relationship between the music and the technology business. Network operators, in particular, have for too long had a free ride on music — on our clients’ content. It’s time for a new approach — time for ISPs to start taking responsibility for the content they’ve profited from for years. And it’s time for some visionary new thinking about how the music and technology sectors can work as partners instead of adversaries, leading to a revival of recorded music instead of its destruction.

No Line On The Horizon, the new studio album from U2, will be released on Monday 2nd March 2009.

Written and recorded in various locations, No Line On The Horizon is the group’s 12th studio album and is their first release since the 9 million selling album How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb, released in late 2004.

Sessions for No Line On The Horizon began last year in Fez, Morocco, continued in the band’s own studio in Dublin, before moving to New York’s Platinum Sound Recording Studios, and finally being completed at Olympic Studios in London.

The album calls on the production talents of long-time collaborators Brian Eno and Danny Lanois, with additional production by Steve Lillywhite.
